Doctor Resignation - Chapter 8
“Then, we will be on our way,” Perelman said.
The Duchess was busy managing the land anyway, so we made our visit end quickly. She couldn’t stop Perelman’s private plans but expressed disapproval by not responding to our farewell greetings.
Viscount Perelman, Erhan, and I were forced to leave together.
As soon as Perelman left the Duchess’ room, he greeted Erhan dryly and disappeared somewhere, Erhan and I went back to our respective rooms.
I said goodbye to him and tried to enter my room, but he looked up at me and smiled.
“It’s true that Viscount Perelman likes you.”
“I told you.”
When I saw Erhan from afar when I was nineteen, I never thought he was cool at all.
However, the more I looked at the thirteen-year-old Erhan, the more I found him to be strangely cute and handsome.
He resembles the Duchess. His long curved eyes, dark eyebrows, black hair, and delicate white face are quite impressive.
“I told you. I’m not lying.”
As I entered the room, I patted Erhan’s head without realizing it.
“I heard from Jenny earlier that there is a bell in your room that connects to the one in my room. If you feel uncomfortable with something, make sure to ring the bell. I’ll be right there.”
He sighed slightly.
“My mother is wary of others. She’s a little cold, she’s like that to me, too. She has become more sensitive after Father’s death, I understand if you’re offended because of her cold words.”
“It’s better to be suspicious than less prepared. I wasn’t offended at all.” I answered calmly because I thought it was nothing special. “In the end, she will eventually see my great skills and acknowledge me.”
Erhan stared at me and nodded.
“Yes. If you really don’t lie as you say, that’s what will happen. I’ll wait and see.”
When he was with Frederick, he was like a baby who hasn’t grown up yet, but he could speak more dignifiedly than I thought.
I slightly smiled as I watch Erhan’s back walking proudly to his room after raising his chin.
“Master Erhan, you have to eat everything tonight, too! It’s a promise! I assure you, no one will find it funny or look down on you!”
Erhan turned around and nodded slightly, and I laughed contentedly.
Since it’s already like this, I will raise him to the fullest.
When I entered the room, I was lost in thought.
‘I became the assistant of Viscount Perelman.’
It was an exceptional case to be accepted as an assistant and be given full authority on medical treatment in just three days.
However, getting free access to the lab is another problem.
However, from the previous conversation, I discovered what I needed to make this strategy work.
‘I will develop a paternity test.’
At this point in time, almost ten different tests have to be carried out to verify paternity. Furthermore, each test is quite tricky and takes a very long time.
But I know that a new method of paternity test will come out in six years. The new version is about three days faster by reducing ten to 7 tests, but I’m not sure how they did that.
‘Perhaps…… If I combine the Efron grass with the Syrika roots……’
I’ve only read it in newspaper articles and never reproduced it myself. However, I think I can reproduce it if I experiment with it a few times.
‘If I can come up with a slightly faster version of the test that eases the results in ten days and gives him the results, he might let me use the lab when I tell him I’ll try to come up with a faster method for parental tests.’
I asked Jenny to bring me some Efron grasses, Syrika roots, and simple experimental instruments. I spent the whole afternoon alone and started researching.
It was quite a simple task that only needed to have the right mix, but of course, it needed a few trials and errors.
I had to find out quickly, so I immersed myself in my research, eating my dinner on bread alone.
Meanwhile, the sun sets and the moon begins to take its place.
“Almost there…… I think I got it now.”
The entire Duchy mansion went dark at night.
I was still struggling with Syrika roots when suddenly the bell beside my bed rang.
According to the maid in charge of magic items, if the bell rings green, it’s a call from Perelman and if it rings blue, it’s a call from Erhan.
‘And if it rings red, it’s a call from the Duchess.’
I stopped studying and stood up nervously.
The bell was red.
‘Duchess? In the middle of the night?’
The cold Duchess’ face came to mind.
She is not a particular opponent I wanted to face in the middle of the night, but now was not the time to run.
“My head hurts. Give me some painkillers.”
“Do you have a migraine on your right side as usual? Or are you suffering from a throbbing pain?”
The duchess stared at me.
“It’s all in the medical journals. And the more detailed the symptoms I know, the better I can give treatment.”
At my answer, she sighed.
“I have a throbbing pain.”
I gave one of the two medicines I had prepared, the Duchess drank at once and then laid back.
Holding the medicine bottle, I sat by the bedside and held her hand still. The Duchess looked at me in wonder.
“Aren’t you going?”
“I will stay until you sleep.”
I held her hand tight and smiled slightly.
“If you inject mana directly like this when you have a headache, it will give a slight somnifacient effect.
“Viscount Perelman is a man, so he wouldn’t have given you this prescription.”
The Duchess stared at me but didn’t let go of my hand. A time of silence passed and her eyes began to slowly close.
“Are you not afraid of me?”
“I am not.”
Whenever people from the Duchy came and demanded a verdict, or when an employee made a mistake, she would always give a passive expression.
What’s more, everyone usually avoided the Duchess because she always had a cold face. But……
“I believe that I can do my job well, so why should I be afraid of you?”
There’s no reason for me to be scared.
“In the end, you will trust me.“
I gently stroked her hand.
Since a doctor is not a wizard, it is not possible to use magic directly.
However, an outstanding doctor could diagnose or manipulate the flow of mana in the human body.
Especially injecting mana is a very delicate task. It can’t be done unless the person is a really good doctor.
‘For example, like me.’
The Duchess muttered, “It’s been a long time.”
“To hold someone’s hand and fall asleep.“
I answered in a low voice, injecting her with warm mana. “It’s my first time.”
“Holding someone’s hand in her room and waiting for her to fall asleep.”
“I grew up in an orphanage.”
Before returning, even when working in a clinic and gaining medical knowledge, I never went to someone’s home for a business trip.
Therefore, this is my first time waiting for someone to fall asleep.
In the orphanage, everyone gathered to sleep, and since everyone worked all day, we were so exhausted that we just collapsed in bed.
Of course, I was curious about my parents, but I thought they were smart people no matter who they were. Otherwise, I couldn’t have been this smart.
‘But why did those smart people lose me?’
I didn’t know if I was lost or if they died young.
I could live well without my parents, but of course, I couldn’t help but wonder.
‘I wish I could find them this time.’
I’ll grow well no matter what, so if they are still alive, I can be nice to them, without blaming them.
And even if it fails, I am going to make a new family and become a good parent myself.
The Duchess called me, murmuring. It was her first time calling my name, so I was a little surprised.
Earlier in the afternoon, she didn’t even call her own son, Erhan.
“You don’t even know the faces of your parents?”
“Yes, I wish I had a family too,” I answered calmly.
There was silence again, and the duchess murmured in a whisper. “Thank you. I’m getting sleepy.” It was definitely a voice that was falling asleep.
“Of course. Because it is a prescription that has a sleeping effect.”
“……it’s been a long time.”
With that said, the Duchess slept completely.
Before I knew it, she held my hand tightly. Maybe she’ll wake up tomorrow and have a lighter head.
