Enduring as a Maid in a Horror Game - Chapter 19
It’s not a lie that my heart raced when I saw Adrian.
Because of my perception ability, his presence always heightened my heartbeat.
I tossed out the first answer that came to mind, wondering if it was adequate.
Had I irritated the killer’s senses?
My life could depend on the outcome of this question.
Fearlessly, I closed my eyes, then opened them to see the system’s notification.
「Adrian’s affinity increased by one.」
「Adrian’s current affinity level is lv.1 (3/400).」
This was entirely unexpected.
I was surprised for a second, then covertly peered at Adrian.
Ultimately, it was too dark to see him, and he was half-turned, but he appeared to be smiling.
So, direct flattery also works.
A demon who enjoys being flattered.
Should I be glad or depressed?
“Alright. You can leave now.”
Adrian was sending me away without raising a finger, and our exchange appeared to be finished.
I knew I needed to leave, but…
“Just one more thing, Young Master. Concerning the pillow.”
I couldn’t abandon it.
That luxurious, enticing pillow that had provided me with lovely slumber.
“Could you throw away that saliva-stained pillow for me? It must be difficult for you to use right now.”
“You said you have no money.”
“Yes, I was broke. You can smack me if you find even one gold nugget on me.”
“And you want to owe me?”
“What do you think I might ask for in return, Hilda?”
“What would you ask for?”
Normally, at this point in the talk, I would have left in terror, but my obsession with the pillow kept me there.
Adrian’s lips curled up on one side as if astonished by my reaction.
“I need six pillows to sleep.”
When I turned around, six fluffy white pillows were on the bed.
Involuntarily, I furrowed my brow.
Some others couldn’t even sleep because they had no pillow!
“What… I mean, yes, of course.”
“Could you replace the pillow that’s missing?”
Adrian’s request was unexpected, leaving me to ponder the consequences.
His speech was pleasant, and the corners of his eyes crinkled in a friendly smile.
I had goosebumps from head to toe despite the melting, adorable expression.
Was he expecting me to replace the pillow?
What exactly did that mean?
Was he talking about skinning me to make a pillow?
“Oh my goodness, Young Master. You wouldn’t be able to sleep on that. I understand if you want to use the saliva-stained one.”
The thought terrified me.
“Well, I think it would be quite warm and soft.”
“I apologize. I’m going to leave quietly now.”
I was a moron for attempting to reason with a monster.
A stunning madman.
Someone who has killed previously cannot be sane.
I backed away slowly, then immediately opened the door and raced out.
I thought I heard a slight giggle behind me, but it was all in my head.
It’s all in my head.
I was losing it.
How could I have dozed off there?
Now, I’ve drawn the murderer’s notice even more.
I scolded myself as I walked back to my room.
I intended to find clues and quit this game peacefully, but everything I’ve done lately has been anything but.
I also recognized that how I spoke and acted in front of Adrian was out of character for Hilda.
My resolution not to lose any more money had triumphed over my instinctive anxiety and terror.
But there was a bright side.
I wasn’t charged for soiling Adrian’s mattress even after I returned to my room.
The six gold bars I won today, despite being reduced by 80%, appeared more precious and dazzling than ever.
My paltry income would never have paid for Adrian’s bed and linens if I had been charged for them.
I could have ended up frantic to get out of this game, tormented by debt like a real-life debtor fleeing loan sharks.
At the very least, it was a relief.
I had fixed the problem by speaking with the person involved.
The subject of ‘Why don’t you look at me’ seemed small compared to destroying the bedding.
Adrian had detected my deliberate avoidance, which surprised me.
Given the amount of servants and my unremarkable appearance, I assumed I was simply ‘passing servant number 58’ to him.
“I don’t know. I’m too exhausted. I’ll just sleep on it and think about it later.”
Although I got a nice night’s sleep in Adrian’s room, it wasn’t enough to overcome the tiredness caused by dread.
After changing and washing, I was about to crawl into bed when an invisible hand pushed me away.
「You can’t sleep since there isn’t a pillow.」
I had forgotten about that.
That dreadful white writing was the core of all the problems.
If it hadn’t irritated me so much in the first place, I wouldn’t have ended up destroying and shortening the pillow’s life.
If its durability hadn’t diminished, my exhaustion wouldn’t have increased, and I wouldn’t have fallen asleep in Adrian’s room, perhaps enhancing my odds of survival without being recognized.
If my life is remembered as ‘a stepping stone used by Adrian to regain his demonic powers,’ this system will face more than half of the blame.
“Did you hear what I heard? It’s more than half your fault if I die here!”
The system stayed mute, but I condemned it furiously as if it had a conscience. ‘It’s all your fault,’ I said, ‘don’t you have a conscience,’ ‘How can you say I can’t sleep because there’s no pillow in this situation,” slave driver, cruel employer, scammer, thug.’ I felt a little better when I vented my rage. Even the system seemed to have quieted down a little.
“So, can I sleep in the bed now?”
After all that, indeed it wouldn’t say the same thing about the pillow again?
「You can’t sleep since there isn’t a pillow.」
This system is completely devoid of conscience.
I felt more wrong than when I spent 500,000 won on a gacha game and received nothing in return.
“How am I supposed to find a pillow at this late hour!”
If I can’t sleep again tonight because I don’t have a pillow, my exhaustion will worsen, and my work for tomorrow will suffer.
Who knows what other pretext it will use to demand compensation and seize my valuable six gold?
Then I won’t be able to afford a pillow, and without a pillow, I won’t be able to work…
I needed to interrupt this cruel loop as soon as possible.
I awoke Emily, who was asleep, to inquire about Anna’s whereabouts.
“Hilda… Do you have no idea, or are you just curious?”
“Uh, umm. I can’t recall. My memory has been foggy lately. It’s a serious issue.”
“You’re different… Yawn.”
Emily, awakened from a deep sleep, did not appear willing to interrogate me further.
“But why are you looking for Anna?”
“Well… I was wondering if she had a pillow I could purchase.”
