Since I'm Born in a Guideverse - Chapter 50
The Esper struggled for breath after dragging an injured person out of the danger zone.
Other Espers possessing wind powers formed a barrier nearby to keep the poison from spreading.
“Are those the last of the civilians?”
Another Esper, wiping blood from his mouth, asked.
“Yeah. How about you? Is your rampage level still manageable?”
“Still fine. I haven’t needed to use my powers much since the gate’s grade rose.”
It was natural, given that they had been physically fighting the beasts.
Their success, and the fact that no one had died despite the S-rank gate, were all down to Ian, who was still fighting inside the toxic curtain.
But deep inside, all the awakened ones recognized the harsh reality.
Those who had entered the gate to destroy the core were most likely killed.
The thought of their slain comrades darkened their faces.
Meanwhile, the noises of conflict echoed incessantly from behind the barrier.
Someone would have to enter the gate to destroy the core, but no one was qualified for the job.
A dialect-speaking voice broke the tension as the Espers gnashed their teeth with frustration.
“Hey, you guys still alive?”
Kwon Daseon, Team 6’s commander, was well-known across the Seoul Center.
Baek Saena, the deputy team leader, followed suit, carrying gas masks.
“Looks like we don’t have enough gas masks.”
Kwon and Baek did not wear any, as their talents made them superfluous.
“Everyone has already inhaled that thing. What’s the point now?”
“Should we not hand them out?”
“What? Saena, you’re talking nuts right now. Hand them out, of course!”
“Is this all the support we have?” Yerim, the leader of Team 2, joined in.
“Looks like it. The other team leaders and deputies are still dealing with other issues.”
“So no Yoon Hamin?”
As Yerim and the Espers debated the grim situation, Ian and the gigantic snake emerged from the toxic fog and fought on the walls of adjacent buildings.
The snake transfixed on Ian, followed her motions and entangled itself in the constructions.
Ian resumed her onslaught, drawing the snake’s full attention to her and causing damage to the building.
Kwon whistled in amazement, “What are we even watching here?”
“We are witnessing a battle between Guide Seo Ian and a monster presumed to be at least A-rank.”
Baek Saena responded automatically.
Her stern demeanor toward her team leader was not unusual.
“I’m not asking because I don’t know,” Team Leader Kwon responded, removing his gloves and reaching into the noxious mist.
The poison began to permeate into his hands.
“Mmm… it’s not absorbing well. Though it is not completely ineffective, it will take some time to absorb properly.”
Kwon Daseon was an A-rank poison Esper.
He could absorb natural poison and those produced by abilities up to A-rank.
“Tricky. Is that huge serpent the boss?”
It wasn’t too farfetched because of the recent tendencies of boss monsters emerging from gates.
However, the Team 8 Esper contradicted his guess and provided a reason, “Unlikely. Guide Seo Ian’s sword has A-rank anti-ability, and its inflicted wounds do not heal.”
“So, that white snake, it has regenerative abilities?”
This meant that Ian was solely responsible for confronting this creature.
“Without Ian, we’d be heading to certain death trying to destroy the core.”
“Continue to contact Esper Yoon Hamin. He appears to be the only one available,” Yerim remarked, pulling her hair back in preparation for the fight.
“He probably won’t respond or come,” Kwon and Baek Saena agreed.
Yerim had the same thoughts before Ian entered the center.
“If you contact Esper Yoon Hamin, tell him Seo Ian is here. He might come then,” she reasoned.
Yerim, clutching her fist, grabbed two gas masks from Baek Saena and dashed away, intending to aid Ian until help arrived.
“What’s she talking about?”
“Who knows? She just ran off by herself.”
“The adrenaline must have kicked in. While I contain the cloud, Saena, begin detoxifying the poisoned.”
“Please help me contain the poison. The remainder must deal with weaker beasts. Following Yerim will not help, but rather hinder.”
Kwon Daseon issued orders fast, and all Espers and guides jumped into action, except one.
“Why don’t you go? What are you doing standing there?”
Daseon asked Sihyun with a crooked smile, implying he would not tolerate disobedience.
After a brief pause, Sihyun spoke with resolve.
“…I want to join Team Leader Choi’s group.”
Sihyun, an Esper who manipulates wind, insisted on entering the fight rather than assisting in containing the deadly mist.
“Wow… Look at that. You should have said it sooner. You do business with Team Leader Choi and Guide Seo Ian, correct?”
The direct hit caught Sihyun off guard and clenched his jaws tight.
“Okay, alright. These stubborn people never listen. Go ahead.”
Team Leader Kwon pointed to Ian, who was still fighting against the building wall, indicating that Sihyun could escape.
Sihyun’s face brightened, as a strong wind blew from the ground, lifting him into the air.
He appeared to have a good sense of balance.
Soon after, he accompanied Team Leader Choi.
Watching this, Saena said in a monotone voice, “Esper Sihyun has also developed. I thought he couldn’t fly before.”
“Why, Saena, are you interested in that young man? Remembering such details.”
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“After all, I’m your team leader.”
“Oh, okay. Sorry.”
Saena apologized without showing any regret.
Meanwhile, Ian was fighting a tough struggle.
The massive serpent from the S-rank gate was the most difficult enemy she had encountered thus far.
Not only were its fangs and scales tough to cut through, but having to keep the scabbard in her mouth to prevent the poison was also inconvenient.
Saliva dripped from her mouth onto the scabbard.
Ian regained her bearings and found herself on the building’s highest floor.
As she pushed herself off the wall to leap again, the snake raced directly for her, its mouth securely closed.
